7 High Expectations Part II
Show Notes

This week Danielle and Sari take a break from teacher interviews, and dive into more about high expectations. Based on feedback from listeners, they discuss how to establish a high bar with students. Danielle models a roll-out of how she would set high expectations in her classroom, followed by a discussion about exactly what Danielle said and why, and how she delivered her message.

Here is an outline of Danielle’s talking points:

  • This day/week/year is going to be different. I am going to share how you know I care.
  • I believe in you. There is no math/reading gene. I expect you all to achieve the highest levels you are capable of.
  • We love mistakes. Make mistakes. We can learn together.
  • I am not perfect. I will make mistakes, too. It is safe to make mistakes.
  • My expectations: Let’s make connections and let’s create new neural pathways this year.
  • My goal is to introduce information you may not know.
  • I value working deeper, not quicker, so let’s find ways to deepen our understanding together.
  • I see you. I value you. You are important.
  • You matter. You matter to me, this class, this school.

We also want to note that we understand many of you are planning for or already in school closures. While we know we can’t replace what will be lost if students are home due to extended school closures, we hope we can be part of your efforts to ensure learning continues.
